The name dates from 1840s. The area is 14 miles long and had a 30 foot thick coal seam close to the surface.
It covers most of Dudley and Sandwell and parts of Walsall and Tipton.
Not Wolverhampton, Stourbridge and Smethwick.

Picture shows Dudley Castle ruined fortification which was built in 1070. Originally a woodern motte and bailey castle built soon after the Norman Conquest.
